About Running for research

I am fundraising for ALK Positive Inc. to raise funds for lung cancer research. Please consider helping me reach my goal of $3000 USD towards life-changing research funding and support for those affected by this rare condition.

ALK Positive Inc. is a charity I'm passionate about supporting because my mother was diagnosed with lung cancer a few years ago. Despite being the leading cause of cancer mortality, lung cancer receives far less research funding than any other cancer. ALK positive lung cancer occurs in 5% of all lung cancer patients and 85% of people diagnosed are non-smokers. It is not clear what the cause of this cancer is and there is no cure. 

Discovered in 2007, “ALK-positive cancer” refers to the rearrangement of the EML4 gene and the ALK (anaplastic lymphoma kinase) gene in your DNA, resulting in a fusion oncogene EML4-ALK. An oncogene is a gene that is a mutated and may cause cancer cells. If you have cancer with an “ALK rearrangement”, part of your ALK gene is mutated, resulting in uncontrolled cell replication - cancer.

ALK positive is a wonderful charity that supports patients diagnosed with ALK positive lung cancer. In addition to funding cutting edge research and clinical trials specifically relating to ALK positive lung cancer, they work with leading professionals in the field to consistency provide excellent educational videos about the latest developments. They also host an annual free conference, a support group, and many more initiatives.

Because I am running my first marathon this May, it seemed like the perfect opportunity to raise money for an important cause near to my heart. To stay accountable, I'll continue to share my long runs leading up to the race. I'm excited to share more in the coming weeks!
