#Just Beat It!

My name is Joni Ruddick. I live in Nassau County NY with my husband Mike and my two children Luci & John. In April of '22 I underwent an abdominal CT Scan to rule out a hernia. Although, the scan did not show any signs of a hernia, it did show a dime sized mass in the lower lobe of my right lung. Soon after I underwent a biopsy, lobectomy and biomarker testing leading to a diagnosis of ALK+ Lung Cancer. I am a lifetime NON SMOKER.  When you have been healthy and fit you don’t expect to be diagnosed with cancer and no less lung cancer.  Lung Cancer is the leading cause of cancer fatalities, killing more people every year than colorectal, breast and prostate cancer combined. Yet, Lung Cancer receives a disproportionally low share of funding. About 15% of lung cancer is Small Cell Lung Cancer, which is most often associated with a smoking history. The other 85% of lung cancer is Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer, which is unrelated to smoking.   IF YOU HAVE LUNGS, YOU CAN GET LUNG CANCER.

The ALK mutation was discovered in 2007 and the first ALK targeted therapy was developed in 2013. Research efforts have increased the survival average from:  one year from diagnosis to as far as 16 years!
