Fred & Joan's Lung Cancer Team

Fred Musser / ALK Positive 2023

Through my journey we were shocked by the lack of awareness for this disease. Today there is more hope because so many people are joining in support of raising more funds for research and solutions to extend life. One of my goals is to witness those advancements and be a part of helping to find a cure. It will eventually happen with the growing attention Lung Cancer is getting. Hopefully they will find a cure before my cancer comes back. The funds we raise will increase survival by improving the lives of those vulnerable, at risk, and diagnosed with lung cancer. Help us support this much-needed effort by making a contribution to my fundraiser and sharing this page with your family and friends. Onward and Upward!! More Research! More Life! Thank you again for your support! With Love and Appreciation, Fred and Joan Musser

About Fred & Joan's Lung Cancer Team

My wife Joan and I are fighting my battle with lung cancer together. I started on my unexpected cancer journey 2.5 years ago, with a diagnosis of Stage IV Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC). This is the type of lung cancer that non-smokers get as I never smoked. NSCLC kills more people than colon cancer because they don’t screen for it and it is almost always found at stage 4! NSCLC is caused by a gene mutation. In my case it was found at stage 4 and through genetic testing it was determined to be ALK Positive (Anaplastic Lymphoma Kinase) and it is not inherited and anyone can get it. ALK Positive has the most Targeted Kinase Inhibitors (TKI’s) available to treat it. Surprisingly they are now finding quite a number of cancers are caused by gene mutations not just NSCLC. In my case I did not have to have surgery, chemo therapy or radiation treatment. Instead I just take the TKI medication in the form of pills twice a day. Now 2.5 years later I am cancer free! But it is not a cure and my cancer will come back at some time in future.
